Five Things to Do with Friends in 30 Minutes
You do not need a free weekend to do something with a friend. Pick one of these small adventures, agree on a stopping time, and use the half hour you have.
Five original activities from Do Good Things with Friends. No purchase or email signup required. These are not excerpts from our products.
1. The color hunt
Time: 20 minutes. Bring: a phone camera, optional. Try it: outdoors or from a window.
- Choose one color together.
- Spend 15 minutes finding five things in that color along a familiar, accessible route. Staying in one place works too.
- Use the final five minutes to compare your most unexpected finds. Take photos only where it is safe and welcome.
Text a friend: "Twenty-minute color hunt? You pick the color. I pick the route."
2. The three-song swap
Time: 25 minutes. Bring: three songs each and a way to listen. Try it: in person or on a call.
- Each choose a song that reminds you of somewhere, one you would play on a road trip, and one you think the other person has not heard.
- Take turns playing a short part of each song and sharing why you picked it.
- Choose one song you both want to hear again. No playlist homework required.
Text a friend: "Bring three songs. I'll bring three. Twenty-five minutes, no skipping your weird pick."
3. The snack remix
Time: 30 minutes. Bring: familiar, ready-to-eat ingredients you already have. Try it: at home.
- Spend five minutes checking allergies, dietary needs, and what is available. Skip anything that is not safe for everyone eating.
- Each build a small snack from two or three ingredients. No shopping trip or cooking challenge needed.
- Give each creation an unnecessarily dramatic name, then enjoy it together. Tasting is always optional.
Text a friend: "Snack remix at mine? Thirty minutes. The names must be more impressive than the snacks."
4. The tiny thank-you mission
Time: 15 minutes. Bring: paper and a pen, or your phone. Try it: together anywhere comfortable.
- Each think of someone who made an ordinary day easier.
- Write two specific sentences: what they did and why you appreciated it.
- Send your own note, or save it to give privately. There is no need to share personal details with your friend or post a screenshot.
Text a friend: "Fifteen-minute thank-you mission? One person each. Two sentences. Done."
5. The familiar-place field trip
Time: 30 minutes, including travel. Bring: curiosity. Try it: at a nearby public place you can reach comfortably.
- Choose a familiar spot close enough to fit the time, such as a park, library, or public art display. Check opening hours and access first.
- Pretend you are showing a visitor around. Each find one detail, object, or view you have never pointed out before.
- Give your mini outing a title and agree on one place to try another day. If travel would eat the half hour, do a window-view tour at home instead.
Text a friend: "Half-hour field trip somewhere we already know? Let's find one thing we've missed."
Make the plan smaller, not more complicated
Pick just one activity. Name the day, place, and finishing time in the invitation. Adapt the idea for your energy, access needs, and comfort. A shorter version still counts.
